The Garden

You are welcome to explore our ten acres, half of which lie along the beach, and the other half behind the lake which is bridged by a causeway. (Our water, which is safe to drink but with a slight limey taste, comes from our own wells carved in the coral behind the lake; we also provide ample bottled drinking water). The front portion has wide lawns dotted with palms (coconuts, Royals, buccaneers and palmettos), flowering bushes and a few immense casuarinas. 2 hammocks slung between palm trees overlook the ocean. The rear part has a garden with fruit trees (bananas, oranges, mangoes, sugarapples, guavas etc - please, help yourself!) and many flowering bushes, protected from the salt air by a casuarina grove. The lake is bordered by palms and buttonwood trees, and hosts many interesting birds, including coot, ducks, egrets, ibis and roseate spoonbills, especially as it shrinks at the end of the dry season. Birders might be interested in the available list of our sightings at "Calypso".

We have cut 2 trails through the jungle around "Calypso". However, the jungle trail was mostly destroyed by bulldozing along the old abandoned road, and only the initial parts of the trail survive. The lake trail starts behind the hill in the rear garden (follow blue blazes), it goes to the far end of the lake, where you must turn back. The second, marked with red blazes, has 2 spurs. One  retraces the lake trail back over the hill, and then turns right through the jungle but stops at the bulldozed abandoned road. The other spur starts somewhat further northwest, near the entrance to the main back garden.. This jungle trail spur takes you into primeval Eleuthera virtually unchanged since Columbus’s arrival. The lake trail takes about a half hour. Please note that there are no poisonous snakes on Eleuthera.
