There are basically only 2 trips to take (north or south) , but both are long, can be
repeated frequently with new surprises, and culminate in two of the most beautiful spots
to be found on earth. The trip north goes through Governors Harbor airport (where
you arrive) , then James Cistern, Hatchet Bay, Gregory Town, the Glass Window, the Bogues
and finally the short ferry ride across to Harbor Island. On the way you can visit lots of
gorgeous beaches, such as Surfers Beach (almost always a good wave), a cave complex
and a couple of other small hotels (the only other ones on the island). Harbor Island is
magical, but, after the emptiness of Eleuthera, almost crowded. Its beach is amazing. The
trip south takes you past Savannah Sound (almost derelict, but visit its creamy beach with
views across the Sound to royal Windermere Island), Tarpum Bay (visit the 2 artists
studios here characters from Maugham novels) with a side excursion to Winding Bay
and Shark Cut, then the farm just north of Rock Sound for fresh fruit, avocadoes etc and
incredible fig trees. Rock Sound itself has the islands only good supermarket, the
curious Ocean Hole, and the elegant golf course community of Cotton Bay. The road then
enters a time warp: Green Castle (visit the marine cemetery), Wemyss Bight, Millars and
Bannerman Town. Just before the latter (where civilisation relinquishes its increasingly
tenuous hold on the island), turn down a difficult track toward Lighthouse Beach, and keep
going (despite your better sense). You will not be disappointed.
