How To Get to Eleuthera There are 2 basic ways to arrive - by air or by boat. In both cases we recommend that your arrive at Governor's Harbour, which is the capital of the island, centrally located, and quite close to Calypso. However, you could consider arriving in the north of the island (by air at North Eleuthera airport -ELH; by boat at Spanish Wells, Harbour Island or Current). Although this only adds an extra 40 miles or so to the drive to Calypso, this may take 1 1/2 hours (and longer at night, which we do not recommend since the road is narrow, unmarked and unlighted). Please make sure you have the correct travel documents - US citizens may now require passports for travel to the Bahamas. Although the Bahamian authorities are reasonable, some US airlines are not. You can arrive at Governor's Harbour airport (GHB) nonstop from Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Miami (MIA) or Nassau (NAS). We usually fly Twin Air (flytwinair.com) from Fort Lauderdale. We have found them to be reliable, helpful and courteous. Unfortunately they have moved their operation from the Jet Center at FLL to a facility on N Perimeter Road (they still fly into the Jet Center). The new facility is much less attractive than the Jet Center (though if you have time to kill you could check out the park on the other side of the road, which has nice live oaks). Twin Air fly small modern twin-propellor planes and there is only 1 pilot. However, it is probably more likely that you will have a heart attack in the air than the pilot. You could also try Lynx Air (lynxair.com). Continental (continental.com) also have nonstop flights to GHB from FLL. However, our experience has been that large airlines like Continental can be rather unhelpful and callous. |
